Lime Essential Oil is the 100 PV Gift with Purchase this month!

Sailors and explorers never set sail without crates of lime on board, as its vitamin C- loaded juice served as one of the most potent remedies for scurvy and other skin problems. Now, lime is more popularly used as a cooking ingredient, adding a tangy flavor to your favorite dishes. But there's another great way to reap its benefits: use lime oil. Get to know the many uses of this invigorating and refreshing citrus oil.
What Is Lime Oil?
Lime oil comes from Citrus aurantifolia of the Rutaceae plant family. This evergreen tree is short and bushy, growing between 6 and 13 feet high (much smaller than orange or grapefruit trees), and has dark green leaves, white blossoms, and green oval fruits. There are two main types of lime trees: the Mexican lime (Key lime) and the Tahiti lime (Persian or Bearss lime).
Lime is indigenous to Southeast Asia and then spread to Egypt and Africa. The Moors also introduced lime to Spain during the 1200s and became a widely used fruit throughout Europe before it reached American shores. Today, the largest producer of lime is India (16 percent), followed by Mexico (14.5 percent), Argentina (10 percent), Brazil (8 percent), and Spain (7 percent).
Lime oil has a sharp citrus scent, and is either pale yellow or light olive in color depending on how it was produced. Although it's traditionally used as a flavoring agent in food, there are other well-known uses for it.
Uses of Lime Oil
Lime oil has been extensively used in the food and beverage industry, as well as in making fragrances. This versatile citrus oil is also added to household cleaners, detergents, soaps, and other beauty products.
You can also get body-wide benefits by using lime oil in aromatherapy, as it is stimulating and refreshing. Just like lemon oil, lime oil can be used for its cleansing properties. Its rich vitamin C content also makes it an ideal immune system booster, helping protect you from colds and flu.
There are multiple ways to use lime oil, depending on what health condition you want to treat or address:
You can relieve stress, exhaustion, and anxiety, or calm your mind by diffusing a few drops using a vaporizer. This also helps boost your immune system, especially after an illness. You can add it to your bathwater as well.
For colds, coughs, sinusitis, sore throat, and chest congestion, add a few drops to a bowl of steaming water and inhale it. You can also mix a few drops with a carrier oil, then rub it on your neck and chest.
If you have rheumatism and arthritis, put two to three drops in an ounce of carrier oil, then massage on the affected areas regularly. This method also works for cellulite and varicose veins.
Treat bleeding cuts and wounds by putting two drops in a cold compress and pressing it on the affected areas.
For acne and other skin problems, mix two drops of lime oil with 15 drops of jojoba oil and apply onto your skin. This helps wash out impurities while promoting the growth of new skin cells.
Avoid dandruff and bring life to dull, frizzy, or oily hair by mixing a few drops of lime oil into your favorite shampoo. Lime can help remove oil quickly while moisturizing your scalp from within.
Don't just leave lime oil in your medicine cabinet, though. Around the home, lime oil can help:
Remove grease spots and sticker residue. Put lime oil on a cotton pad and use it to wipe surfaces clean. It also helps remove gum and can be used to clean a dry erase board.
Prevent fruits from turning brown. Add one to two drops to your fruits.
Repel insect, such as mosquitoes and ants. Simply diffuse it in your home.
Add flavor to your citrus-infused dishes. Add a few drops for a deeper, tangy flavor.
Composition of Lime Oil
Like lemons, limes and lime essential oil are full of antioxidants and other beneficial nutrients. Lime oil is loaded with terpene hydrocarbons, such as a-pinene, b-pinene, d-pinene, camphene, sabinene, and terponolene. It also contains oxygenated compounds like a-terpineol, 1,8-cineole, 1,4-cineole, linalool, and fenchol, as well as sesquiterpenes. It also contains traces of neral acetate and geranyl acetate.10
Germacrene B, another component of lime oil, is an important fragrance element in lime oil, giving it a sweet, woody-spicy, geranium-like note that makes it distinguishable from lemon oil.
Benefits of Lime Oil
Tetanus can be spread through wounds inflicted by rusty iron objects. Did you know that lime oil can be used to treat such injuries? Just like the fruit, lime oil is chock-full of benefits, owing to its rich antioxidant and nutrient content. It's a great oil to add to your natural first-aid kit.
Lime oil can...
Cure both internal and external infections. It can help prevent wounds from being infected, as well as help cure infections of the throat, colon, mouth, intestines, stomach, and urinary system. It can also help heal or relieve skin problems such as sores, rashes, psoriasis, gangrene, open ulcers, and carbuncles.
Relieve respiratory disorders. It can help treat bronchitis and is effective against viral infections like flu, coughs, colds, mumps, and measles.
Cure toothaches and promote good oral health. It strengthens the grip of the gums to prevent tooth loss...
Help kill bacteria that cause diarrhea, food poisoning, cholera, and typhoid. It also helps treat internal and external bacterial infections.
Help stop bleeding. It contracts blood vessels and promotes coagulation. This also helps reduce your risk of hemorrhages.
Detoxify your liver. Taken internally, it can serve as an important component of a detox regimen and promote liver health.
How Lime Oil is made…
There are two ways by which lime oil is produced: cold-pressing and distilling. Cold-pressed oil has a yellow or green color, with a rich and fresh lime peel aroma. Meanwhile, distilled is either pale yellow or clear, with a fragrant fruity scent.
Between these two, I would recommend using cold-pressed lime oil, as it retains more of the natural elements that make lime oil so beneficial. Even though cold-pressed lime oil costs more than distilled varieties, it's definitely worth the money.
You can also make a basic lime oil infusion at home with these easy steps:
Materials:
2 cups olive oil
4 limes
Citrus zester or paring knife
2 Kaffir lime leaves (optional)
Fine-mesh sieve
Procedure:
Heat two cups of olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat. While doing this, wash the limes and dry them thoroughly.
Using the paring knife or zester, cut the lime zest into quarter-inch strips. Do not cut into the pith, though.
Add the lime zest and two Kaffir lime leaves (if using) to the olive oil. Allow to simmer for 10 minutes over medium heat.
Remove the saucepan from heat and then cover, allowing the zest and leaves to steep for 2 1/2 hours.
Using the fine-mesh sieve, store the oil in an airtight and non-reactive storage container. You can leave the zest in the mixture as a garnish. Store it in a cool, dry place. No need for refrigeration.
This lime oil infusion can be used for up to two weeks.
How Does Lime Oil Work?
According to a 2003 study on the aromatic volatiles in key lime essential oils, the components geranial, neral, and linalool are dominant in lime oil, contributing to its fresh and citrus aroma. These components also contribute to the oil's astringent, tonic, antiseptic, antiviral, antimicrobial, restorative, stimulant, and other health-promoting properties.
To ensure the shelf life of your lime oil, keep it in a cool, dark place, away from sunlight.
Is Lime Oil Safe?
Lime oil can be inhaled or vaporized, used topically, or added to food in small amounts. It's said to be non-toxic and non-irritating, but this does not mean that you should use it recklessly. For instance, do a patch test to see if you have any sensitivity to this oil. Simply apply a drop or two to your skin to check if you develop any allergic reaction.
I do not recommend using undiluted lime oil, as it can be very potent. Instead, blend it with a milder oil, such as coconut oil or olive oil. Lime oil also blends well with lavender, neroli, ylang-ylang, and clary sage.
As with other herbal oils, I advise you to consult your physician before ingesting this oil (diluted or mixed in food) to determine the proper dosage for your condition. I also do not recommend lime oil for pregnant women or nursing mothers without first seeking the advice of their healthcare provider.
Side Effects of Lime Oil
Citrus oils like lime oil are photosensitive, meaning they react to light, radiant energy, or other sources of UV rays. If you use this oil topically and then go out into the sun or other light sources, an adverse reaction such as a rash or dark pigmentation may appear after several minutes, hours, or days after the light exposure.
So, whatever happens, don't expose your skin to the sun if you've just used lime oil. Wait for six to 24 hours before going out. The stronger the UV rays that you will be exposed to, the longer the wait should be.

Lemon Myrtle – a “True Blue” Australian oil

Lemon Myrtle Essential Oil is the 200 PV Gift with Purchase this month!
Lemon Myrtle Essential Oil
Lemon Myrtle – a “True Blue” Australian oil
Lemon Myrtle has often been described as being “more lemony than lemons”. But unlike Lemon oil which comes from the rind of the lemon, Lemon Myrtle oil comes from the leaves of an Australian native tree, Backhousia citriodora.
This tree is found in coastal rainforest areas from South East Queensland (near Brisbane), all the way up to Cairns.
It’s a bush food. The Aboriginal people use the leaves to flavor their food, and in Australia and New Zealand, Young Living Lemon Myrtle oil is one of YL's culinary oils (meaning it’s compliant with Food Standards Australia & New Zealand to be promoted for use in food and drink recipes). That’s not necessarily the case in other countries.
Because of its strong lemon flavor, Lemon Myrtle oil can be used instead of lemon in milk products, because it tastes like lemon but doesn’t curdle the way that lemon does.
And like Lemonks on an emotional level to help us feel uplifted and happy.
A Little Bit of Science
Lemon Myrtle comes from the Myrtacea family of plants, which is the same family that Myrtle oil comes from, so it shares some of the same properties that Myrtle oil has, being very “lung loving”. But they have completely different constituents to each other, so they are like very distant cousins.
Lemon Myrtle oil is the highest natural source of a constituent called Citral, which is what gives it its sweet lemon scent.
Where Lemon oil is only 3 to 10% citral, Lemon Myrtle oil is 90 to 98% citral. Wow! That’s why it’s more lemony than lemons.
Citral comprises two different compounds, geranial and neral, which are optical isomers of each other. That means they look identical to each other, but mirror reversed (think left hand versus right hand).
Would you be surprised to learn that Lemon Myrtle is actually much closer in its chemistry to Lemongrass oil than it is to Myrtle oil? Both Lemon Myrtle and Lemongrass oil are high in geranial and neral, but where Lemongrass oil is 25 to 47% geranial, Lemon Myrtle oil is 45 to 60% geranial….so it’s like Lemongrass on steroids!

Tight Muscles and Ligaments?

Both Lemongrass and Lemon Myrtle oil have the same frequency as our ligaments, so this is where I love to use them.

Many years ago, I learned a wonderful tip from Tom Woloshyn, author of The Complete Master Cleanse. He uses a combination of Idaho Grand Fir and Lemon Myrtle oil on tight muscles and ligaments, and it works a treat!

It’s a great alternative to our Aroma Siez oil for muscles that are in need of some serious relaxation.

Recipes

Give your Thieves Household Spray a bit of a twist

I use Young Living’s Thieves Household Cleaner for all of my cleaning needs around the home. It’s what I spritz on my benchtops, my floors, the toilets, the vanity basin, the kitchen sink, even the windows. It’s my “go-to” for everything I need to clean, and I love that it’s biodegradable and 100% plant and mineral based.

Yes, I’ll add some Thieves Kitchen & Bath Scrub to get a bit of extra shine or “oomph” if I’m working with some ground-in dirt or on my oven, sinks and vanity.

But overall, It’s my Thieves Household Spray that is my “every day and every way” cleaning solution.

I love to add extra oils into my Thieves Household Spray to boost its aroma even more, so this is my favorite recipe:

In a 500ml glass or PET plastic spray bottle, add:
- 1 tbsp. of Thieves Household Cleaner
- 6 drops of Lavender oil
- 6 drops of Orange oil
- 6 drops of Lemon Myrtle oil
Then top up with filtered water, and away you go!
Lemon Myrtle and Apple Juice Spritzer
OK, this is just out of this world! It’s my favorite refreshing drink to serve to guests, especially during the warmer months where a cool drink is so appreciated. So with Summer fast approaching in the Southern Hemisphere, this is a great drink to have on hand for those festive celebrations.
In each glass, I add:
- 50% apple juice (a good quality one, that still has some pulp in it so it tastes real not fake).
- 50% sparkling mineral water
- 1 drop of Lemon Myrtle oil
I then give it a stir to mix in the Lemon Myrtle oil. You could even put a
sliver of apple on the side, to make the glass look more festive.

When it’s mixed in with the apple juice, the Lemon Myrtle flavor is somewhat disguised. I have so much fun listening to my guests trying to guess what that amazing flavor is in their spritzer! (Recipe by Artemis)
Lemon Myrtle and Mango Salsa
Ingredients:
- 1 large mango, peeled
- ½ a vine-ripened tomato
- 1 small Lebanese cucumber (approx. 10cm long)
- 2 tsp of either red onion or a large red chilli (the less hot variety)

Finely dice the mango, tomato, cucumber, red onion/chilli and red capsicum. Mix together in a bowl, and add coriander leaves.

Take the juice of 1 lime, and add 1 drop of Lemon Myrtle oil to it. You can also add a drop of Jade Lemon or Lemon oil if desired.

- 2 tbsp red capsicum, chopped
- ½ cup coarsely chopped coriander leaves
- Juice of 1 lime
- 1 drop of Lemon Myrtle oil
Optional: 1 drop of Jade Lemon or Lemon oil

Take 1 teaspoon of the lime juice/essential oil mix, and stir through the salsa. Taste the salsa, and add another teaspoon of the lime juice/essential oil mix if desired. The remainder of the juice can be set aside for future use.

Decorate salsa with whole coriander leaves. Serves 8. (Recipe by Artemis)
Lemon Myrtle and Dill Herb Butter

Ingredients:
- 120g of softened butter (use olive oil as a vegan alternative)
- 3 to 4 drops of Lemon Myrtle oil
- Optional: 3 to 4 drops of Dill oil
- 1 tbsp of finely chopped fresh dill if available, to give the butter a “fresh herb” look
Blend the essential oil(s) and fresh dill into the butter at low speed in a blender. Place in a sealed container in the fridge until it reaches desired consistency (not too firm, not too soft).

Your Lemon Myrtle and Dill Herb Butter can be stored in the fridge like regular butter for everyday use. Serve on top of Roast Potato or Sweet Potato, Steamed Vegetables or Grilled Fish. Serves 4 to 6. (Recipe by Artemis)

User Experiences with Lemon Myrtle Oil

Stubborn Hospital-Incurred Infection Worried Us

A scratch on my friend's knee while gardening was healing okay, but 2 days later she had to visit a lady in the hospital. My friend crawled under the bed to retrieve a dropped item, and the scratch must have opened up a little. It began to get bigger.

She went to the doctor who prescribed penicillin. He did not take a swab for culture, although she had told him where the problem had started -- in the hospital.

The area swelled, festered, and began to grow, with pus and inflammation all around it -- not to mention the pain. My friend was worried when the lymph nodes in her groin began to swell up. (This was even after taking the antibiotics.)

She called me, and I recommended that she use 3 or 4 drops of Lemon Myrtle essential oil on the wound site, on the groin, and on the bottoms of her feet.

Three days later my friend called me to tell me that the lymph glands had gone down and that the inflammation and pus had decreased. She was very happy.

She kept up with the treatment for 5 or so days after all the symptoms had gone. And now she is fine.

Lemon Myrtle is not the only essential oil that assists with MRSA (which is what we suspect it was). Frankincense, Geranium, Melaleuca, Peppermint, Thyme, and Oregano may also be effective.

Do not forget to skin test and dilute the oils if necessary. Use what you have on hand. I would not be without several bottles of Lemon Myrtle essential oil after this experience.

Stubborn Random Spots May Have Been Folliculitis

My son had some random spots come up on his arms. I didn't notice them at first... until they started to cover his arms. Then I noticed they were on his legs as well. I checked his stomach, and it was clear. The spots were only on his extremities.

My son picked at the spots because they itched, and they would scab over. Then they started to get a hole in them and re-scab. They really were disgusting, and, being an adult, I know when you pick a scab you get left with a scar. These spots just covered his arms and legs!

I looked this condition up on the Internet, and it seemed similar to folliculitis. It was almost like a rash of some kind. I did not have any idea where to even start, so I started using the Thieves oil blend in an attempt to kill the infection. It did help a little.

My mom suggested Melaleuca Alternifolia, so I tried that as well. I am sure with enough consistency, that may have done the trick. But this took months! I applied every night before bed. I probably should have applied daily as well, but I just forgot to. My son had the spots at the end of the school year and through the entire summer.

I was so frustrated because I could not figure out what to do, and I was blowing through my Thieves essential oil blend. I met a man at Silver Retreat who mentioned he had his nanny use Lemon Myrtle on an allergy rash she had for years, and it cleared up after a week.

I came home and switched to Lemon Myrtle, and after another four weeks, the spots were finally gone! My son still has white spots that are scars. I am now using Lavender oil to help improve the look of his scars. But I am so happy the spots are finally gone!

Not only did it look terrible, but it looked like holes deep in his skin that were open wounds and could easily be infected. According to a friend whose son has the same thing, the doctor said it was a type of virus. Who knows what it was, but it is GONE.

I Won The War Against My Skin Tags

I have had skin tags for years and thought I had to just live with them. I did get them removed at my doctor's office once. However they came back with a vengeance. Some came back in clusters with all sizes. My neck had at least 30 skin tags.

I bought a bottle of Lemon Myrtle oil, 3-4 drops applied once a week on all the skin tags. My skin tags started falling off in about a week. Sometimes two or three a day. I am no longer embarrassed to show my neck. I now have confidence that my neck looks normal again.

Thank you Lemon Myrtle. Three applications and my skin is almost totally clear.

I will never forget calling my niece and saying 18 tags fell off today!
